On the use of hydrogen switchable mirrors in Casimir force experiments

چکیده
Hydrogen switchable mirrors (HSMs) are shiny metals that become optically transparent upon exposure to hydrogen. The Casimir force between HSMs is thus supposed to be stronger in air than in hydrogen. A few years ago, an experiment designed to measure this effect gave an unexpected result (Iannuzzi, Lisanti and Capasso 2004 Proc. Natl Acad. Sci. USA 101 4019–23): no change of the force was observed upon hydrogenation. Qualitative arguments show that this result is reasonable if HSMs do not switch at long wavelengths, where no measurements of the dielectric function are available. Because the exact composition of the mirrors used in that experiment is not known, a more quantitative comparison of the data with theory is not possible. Still, calculations of the Casimir force in the presence of similar HSMs of known composition might provide new insights for the interpretation of the experimental result and may suggest precious hints for the development of future analogous experiments. In this paper, we present calculations of the Casimir attraction between Mg2Ni mirrors in air and in hydrogen. Our results clearly indicate that the modulation of the Casimir force with HSMs should be observable with modern set-ups. 1 Author to whom any correspondence should be addressed. Effect of hydrogen-switchable mirrors on the Casimir force.
We present systematic measurements of the Casimir force between a gold-coated plate and a sphere coated with a hydrogen-switchable mirror. Hydrogen-switchable mirrors are shiny metals that can become transparent upon hydrogenation. Despite such a dramatic change of the optical properties of the sphere, we did not observe any significant decrease of the Casimir force after filling the experiment...
متن کاملCasimir force between bimetallic heterostructures
With the recent growth of nano physics, the Casimir effect has gained more attention, and this time also on the experimental side [2–6], because it is clear that Casimir forces will have to be taken into account where micro and nanostructures are involved [7,8]. These experiments were made between a sphere and a plate, a setup that has proved more easily applicable in experiments. Recently Ianu...
متن کاملThe Casimir force for passive mirrors
We show that the Casimir force between mirrors with arbitrary frequency dependent reflectivities obeys bounds due to causality and passivity properties. The force is always smaller than the Casimir force between two perfectly reflecting mirrors. For narrow-band mirrors in particular, the force is found to decrease with the mirrors bandwidth. متن کاملDynamic and Static Pull-in instability of electrostatically actuated nano/micro membranes under the effects of Casimir force and squeezed film damping
In the current study, the effects of Casimir force and squeeze film damping on pull-in instability and dynamic behavior of electrostatically actuated nano and micro electromechanical systems are investigated separately. Linear elastic membrane theory is used to model the static and dynamic behavior of the system for strip, annular and disk geometries. Squeeze film damping is modeled using nonli...
متن کاملSOME POINTS ON CASIMIR FORCES
Casimir forces of massive ferrnionic Dirac fields are calculated for parallel plates geometry in spatial space with dimension d and imposing bag model boundary conditions. It is shown that in the range of ma>>l where m is mass of fields quanta and a is the separation distance of the plates, it is equal to massive bosonic fields Casimir force for each degree of freedom. We argue this equalit...
